Adenylyl cyclase types I and VI but not II and V are selectively inhibited by nitric oxide BJMBR
Goldstein,J.; Silberstein,C.; Ibarra,C..
Adenylyl cyclase (AC) isoforms catalyze the synthesis of 3',5'-cyclic AMP from ATP. These isoforms are critically involved in the regulation of gene transcription, metabolism, and ion channel activity among others. Nitric oxide (NO) is a gaseous product whose synthesis from L-arginine is catalyzed by the enzyme NO synthase. It has been well established that NO activates the enzyme guanylyl cyclase, but little has been reported on the effects of NO on other important second messengers, such as AC. In the present study, the effects of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a nitric oxide-releasing compound, on COS-7 cells transfected with plasmids containing AC types I, II, V and VI were evaluated. Total inhibition (~98.5%) of cAMP production was observed in COS-7...

Electrolyte Leakage and the Protective Effect of Nitric Oxide on Leaves of Flooded Rice Exposed to Herbicides Planta Daninha
SILVA,K.S.; URBAN,L.J. K.; BALBINOT,A.; GNOCATO,F.S.; KRUSE,N.D.; MARCHESAN,E.; MACHADO,S.L.O..
ABSTRACT The nitric oxide acts on the antioxidant system of plants and can discontinue the damage of herbicides elicitors of oxidative stress that cause the disruption of membranes and leakage of cellular contents. In order to evaluate the protective effect of nitric oxide in electrolytes leakage, leaf segments of the Puita INTA CL rice cultivar were incubated with 0, 5, 50, 500 and 5,000 μM clomazone (360 g a.i. L-1), oxadiazon (250 g a.i. L-1), oxyfluorfen (240 g a.i. L-1) and the formulated mixture of paraquat (200 g a.i. L-1) + diuron (100 g a.i. L-1) to obtain the maximum potential conductivity of 50% (MPC50). Subsequently, leaf segments were pre-treated with 0, 200 and 2,000 μM of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) for four hours and further incubated for 48...

Nitric oxide induced alleviation of toxic effects of short term and long term Cd stress on growth, oxidative metabolism and Cd accumulation in Chickpea Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Kumari,Anita; Sheokand,Sunita; Swaraj,Kumari.
The present study investigates the effect of long and short term Cd stress in chickpea plants and evaluates the protective effect of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) supplementation using sodium nitroprusside (SNP). Cadmium treatments were given before sowing (long term stress) and thirty days after germination (short term stress). Sodium nitroprusside was given as foliar spray 30 days after germination to both long and short term Cd treated plants. Cadmium adversely affected the membranes as was evident from increased electrolyte leakage and lipid peroxidation levels. Sodium nitroprusside treatments decreased ion leakage and lipid peroxidation levels significantly. Short term Cd stress resulted in a higher induction of the catalase, peroxidase, ascorbate...
